i mean, you always bring something new, you must be the busiest man ever well, you know, i try to stay, you know, current, up to the times, as they would say with my music and, you know i'm consistently creating music, writing, you know and, like they say that an artist is a reflection of the times so with all the things that's been occurring in america and abroad, i've just been busy making my contribution you know what? i wanted to talk about your video, but now that you talked about an artist reflecting the times i don't know if you are aware, but last week, we played your video yes i heard (laugh) thanks
and that video, "burning house" also known as black lives matter, is certainly a video that reflects the times yeah i'd really like to have your take on that, that an artist has a responsibility you know, we as artist, you know, well me as an artist, i should really speak for myself but these are some of the things i expect from a artist, you know, ah, as far as like their contribution you know, even if its dance music that they do, or gospel music, or jazz, or whatever genre it maybe is that, you know
the times, and for example,me being a black man on planet earth and the things that affect my people, and affect us, i definitely have to say something about it in music because thats what i do, i'm a singer song writer among other things, but we won't talk about that, but am i have to make my contribution, i have to say, what a lot of people want to say and probably don't know how to say it, but because i am an artist, and im a musical artist i express it through music, so i'm constantly making music and you have the platform
yes, the platform is music, the music videos, i have an audience you know what i'm saying regardless of the size of audience, you have an audience and its your responsibility, to give your audience something of substance i agree, i do agree, now lets get back to that video the video that we just watched, "can i bust tonite" now, don't tell me... i saw that that video had some double messages yes absolutely yeah i know i saw that
yes absolutely, you know, without beating around the bush its definitely talking about herb, you know, marijuana which is legal now in a few states in america. laugh...ah and it definitely speaking about our women yes you know, our women, are...oh my god, our women are like priceless you know and the fact that i love,,herbs, and my women or my woman, as i should say. not like i am a womanizer or something i love all women period, because they are the mothers of civilization.
and you know, they are also the true comfort to a man, so ah you know, i have to definitely big them up, and you are going to see a lot of that in my music..if you've been following me that i really value our women, you know. and now that i have a daughter too now its like even more emphasized, you know, yeah so i noticed you kind of merged them together, yes absolutely, you know, i wanted to use my artistic ability to to give people something to embrace, and think about
you know, and look at from another angle you know, and i am sure a lot of people can relate to what i'm saying and besides you music, i have noticed that you music runs the gamete. i can turn on the youtube and i can hear you rapping, i can hear you doing reggae a little dancehall, a little world music, a little afro beat i mean, you run the range, and your videos also reflect that same diversity yeah, you know am as a musician, i've always been influenced by soul music even though my roots are in gospel
i was alway influenced by soul music, and soul music is music you can feel in your soul and a lot of black music is that way whether its reggae, whether its r&b, whether its rap/hiphop, whether its afro beat, whether its soca music regardless of the genre, or the category that they place the soul music in, soul music is one music really, that you can feel.... and i go with what i feel, you know sometimes i feel like expressing, and emotion or a feeling in a jazz song you know, i have a song call, 3000 miles away. and its a jazz song, that i did with the cognomen crew in sweden you know and i have songs where, for example, "can i bust tonite" you know, and i have songs like "every little thing"
which is a reggae song, i have songs like "my lady" which is r&b predominantly so how would we categorize you? who are you? i am mr. lee g, you know, and i can't be boxed. like that you know what i am saying, i don't feel like its like i use to have a problem back in the days, like when i use to be managed by a young lady by the name vicki fulweilder and she would be shopping my music, you know to get a deal and so forth and they would say like, what is it that he is doing, is it this or that and that was always a problem because i always felt that when she ask me, it was alway like, i do music that you can feel in your soul
its soul music, you know, its black music basically you know, and am all black music is connected and now i know its because of mamma africa, (laughing) yeah absolutely speaking of mama africa, i know that you have a charity, (www.ttgbta.com) a time to give back to africa, i think we spoke about that the last time you were here whats happening with your charity ? well now, you know, am we are established as a 501c3...officially and we are actually running ads now
right now we are working on building soccer fields, well at least one for now, you know, we are starting small and am we are trying to build, not we a trying, we are going to build with your help, soccer fields in mali, for the young soccer players out there and we have an ad out there, and you can also go on our website which is a time to give back to africa, www.ttgbta.com and you can checkout what we are doing there you know, and if you want to get involved, thats where you can do it. i have noticed that its something, you are very passionate about yes, absolutely, especially after
you know, you know, i went to school, i went to high school, school of the performing arts, i went to l.i.u and i have done a lot of reading, you know, even when i didn't go to school anymore i've done a lot of reading, and i continue to read, to get knowledge of self, you know i'm always learning everyday more and more about who i am, and where i came from and alot of that has been disconnected through slavery, and you know how the history go but now that i'm re-connecting to africa and i see the disadvantages the disadvantages sorry, she has to endure
i just feel as though, even though i am one person, and one entity you know, that i can be like a spark, that can start a flame of rebuilding you know what i am saying i apologize for using a "flame" as a metaphor for building something, but it's that fire that gets up under you to keep you going you know and i feel as though regardless of how small my contribution is, it is a contribution and i figure if we all did that, then the world would be a better place yeah, well i saw your last venture, and it was amazing, you collected over 600 pairs of sneakers, and clothing and thats amazing
it was amazing, because the thing about it, is that a lot of times when people think about inner city youths or they think about the urban youth, in places like where we are, in brooklyn new york you know, they think of them as being self centered, and just into fashion, and and that venture that we did that mission, was all possible, because the youth of brooklyn contributed and..... made a difference by donating there stuff, you know, stuff that they figured were old, or worn already, and they don't want to wear it no more they gave it to us and the folks in africa were really pleased and happy to have it, you know and it brought a lot of smiles, to a lot of the faces there so there, we have a connection again, and thats what we want to do
we want to make a connection between all the african youths of the world because we are all the same, we are divided by sea and language, but we are all the same and i think the more we become closer, and more knitted, and getting a understanding for who we really are because a lot of that got disconnected, when we came to the west and the connection wouldn't just be about the giving, but trying to get them to know there history, and for them to get to know their american brothers and sisters thats kind of like, one of the things that can come out of a marriage, "so to speak" yes, and i think its necessary, especially in the times that we are living in, with the internet, the whatsapp and the imo
and the instgrams, and again like i said a lot a times we are disconnected by language and sea, but now, thats becoming, something of the pass now, you know because of the facebooks and all the these different mediums that we have now to connect and communicate and we want to encourage that at a time to give back to africa, so how can we help you well first to begin, you can go to www.ttgbta.com and you know sign up to our mailing list, you want to get newsletters and updates on whats going on if you are on facebook, you can also friend our page on facebook, and again its the same thing
fb.com/ttgbta and just get involved, you know, send us a line or a message, and let us know what your contribution can be and again remember we are 501c3 now so you are capable of getting tax exempt, and write offs, etc, my name is mr.lee g from out of brooklyn nyc, and i am an artist, right now we are in brooklyn new york city, on the caton soccer field our organization a time to give back to africa want to provide
fields like this for the less fortunate in africa i'm going to show you some footage of the playing facilities for the youths in africa and you will see that they don't have playing fields like this we are fortunate to have grass fields, that if i fall now (brap) i'm good... get it they don't have that, its a lot of rubbles, stones, dirt, dust i play around here there is no dust in the air i can breath freely, so that my respiratory is good
so with your help we can get the right playing facilities for the young men and women out there the gear, we can get water pumps, we can get the grass fields, or astro-turf which ever is more feasible at the time and we can make a difference, but i need your help its just me mr.lee g, and you probably never heard about me (laugh) you know, and we are trying to make a difference as humanitarians you know you never know soccer is such a beautiful sport, and its a world sport that, one of these young men, or young women that we aid
can be the next messi, the next neymar, the next ronaldo,(laugh) you know what i mean, the next clint dempsey its a world sport, it brings people together every culture in the world plays football, we are going to do and experiment, watch this those folks over there don't know me, but watch this. see see, now thats my point, they don't know me but they are playing with me soccer brings folks together
it brings the world together laugh very good example, i don't know those guys but thats what football does see this this ball represents the world again the word is like ball you know we are here and they are there
and we are one world one planet, i just think that every body deserves to have all the necessities in life to become successful or to make a difference and thats what we want to do at a time to give back to africa we need your help...to come together with us and go over there, and make our contribution we started in 2012 january
we did our first mission in gao, we provided two soccer teams with gears and balls and so fort and then we did it again in 2015 and 2016 ah we provided two soccer teams again as well as clothes and shoes to the less fortunate we want to continue that job and we need your help, now i'm only one person i'm just one artist, i'm just an artist that saw a need for something, and i decided that i'm going to do what i can do to help but now i have seen where, if i get you help, that i can do even more so together, we can work together to make a better africa get involve...ok ..much love..laugh tell me about, you are like the busiest man, tell me about your label, i know that you have a label also
well i have a label because, you know, at some point in time i would like to make sure that there are other artist that can get an opportunity to make there dreams come through you know i've been, folks myth not know, but there is no such thing as an over night success and i've been at it for a minute so and learning through the pitfalls, and the trials and tribulations and how the business aspects, of the music business, really operates, so thats been a growing and a learning process as well and i'm embracing it, i'm loving it i have a book for you, on our first episode, in our "book talk" we talk about a book
yeah i saw that yeah i saw that (laughing) is that the moses avalon book yeah read that yes i actually ...ah ...check out that book before ok like some years ago, i actually was on tour with beyonce as one of her muscle men and her road manager alan floyd he actually told me about that book so i heard about it before so thats a good book to avoid the pitfalls
wel i know today you are going to be unplugged yeah sure, i would love to do something live of course well you know, i was watching youtube, and i saw you playing the keyboards, then i saw you playing the guitar and i thought ok, this is sort of cool yeah you know i love music, you know i think its like my deepest passion there is never a limit you know, there is never a point where i reach and i feel comfortable, you know its like i started off with key boards, and then you know, the guitar and i fell in love with the guitar too, and then it was so much easier to carry around
the piano is like a lot of times a lesson, but you know what i mean yeah so i started learning that, and once my daughter was born, that when i started playing the guitar more, and am, i'm trying to teach her to play too at that ...laugh speaking of daughter, i've seen you and your daughter show, you have your own tv show i have competition yes you sure do(laugh) she is a fabulous host she is amazing yeah my daughter is, now she is seven now actually, she just turn seven ah in october but am
and she is an amazing child you know, its like every day i'm amazed by her you know, its like i even learn from her its so amazing how you can learn from children but then the bible says, out of the mouth of babe and suckling, cometh truth, so thats psalms 8 but what i like about the show is the show is about a father and a daughter doing things together you know, you know out there we are always talking about the black man, and he is not connected with his children and he is a dead beat. so when i watch that show i'm thinking this is just great
thanks you know, and i think, i don't know if you meant to be a model to others, but it certainly ah shows you as a model for black men, i don't know if that was you intention, but am thats what i got from it for me its just (qt) you know, when i say "qt" i mean quality time, you know because am i don't get a lot of time to spend with her all the time, sometimes she is with her mom, and then she is with me, so whenever i get that chance, i try to make full use of it and use it as wisely as possible, cause you know how this business could be i love this show, and i have to keep my eye on her
you sure do..laugh. so what we going to do is, we are going to take a short break, we'll be right back and we are going to set mr. lee g up, so you can hear his music un plugged.. so stay tune yeah yeah yeah hey folks, you already know, i'm mr.lee g from out of brooklyn nyc originally from trini (trinidad and tobago ) and ah i'm just going to give you taste of a few of my songs, you know i won't be long this is every little thing
